Growing domestic demand at heart of plan to create a million manufacturing jobs

Friday 24th November 2017

The Manufacturing Circle released a plan on Friday outlining how South Africa could create a million jobs over a ten-year period through pursuing a series of reforms designed at stimulating demand for South African manufactured products and improving the investment climate. The 48-page document, which also recommends the creation of a "super-ministry", similar to Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), was handed to Trade and Industry Minister Dr Rob Davies at a launch function hosted at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, in Johannesburg. Davies said he "warmly welcomed" the plan, despite disagreeing with some of its recommendations. view more

Microgrids add new arrow to Africa's electricity access quiver

Friday 24th November 2017

The launch of a R25-million solar energy, lithium-ion battery storage microgrid on Robben Island - the World Heritage Site in Table Bay, Cape Town, which, until recently, relied on diesel to generate electricity - not only showcases the versatile advantages of microgrid technology, but also underscores the potential to use microgrids to accelerate electricity access. In Africa, where millions are still without modern energy services, migrogrid technology is increasingly being considered as a serious remedy for addressing energy poverty in the absence of enabling grid infrastructure. In addition, commercial enterprises, from mines to shopping malls, are assessing microgrid investments as a way of lowering energy costs, diversifying sources of supply and locking in price certainty. view more

The authority, which operates, maintains and manages the Kariba dam on behalf of the governments of Zambia and Zimbabwe, hosted its sixth technical joint mission of multiple stakeholders directly involved in the implementation of the KDRP, at Siavonga, Zambia, in early November. view more

Hawks probing Brian Molefe's R30m pension payout claims

Friday 24th November 2017

Trade Union Solidarity announced on Thursday that it would launch legal proceedings to force former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe to repay the "unlawful" R30-million pension payout he received. "Unlawful actions must bear consequences. An apology and even pay back [from Molefe], is not enough," Solidarity CEO Dirk Hermann told reporters at a press briefing in Pretoria. view more

Fitch is giving South Africa a chance to address issues - National Treasury

Friday 24th November 2017

Fitch ratings agency's decision on Thursday, to maintain South Africa's long-term foreign and local currency debt rating at BB+ has given the country a chance to address issues in a manner that will see an upward revision in its ratings, National Treasury said. It said the reprieve could not see South Africa become complacent, and it should remembered that Fitch's decision in April to downgrade the country to 'junk' status contributed to a recession, a decrease in revenue and higher borrowing costs. view more

IMF credit to Chad delayed over Glencore oil debt

Friday 24th November 2017

Chad's stalled talks with Glencore on restructuring more than $1 billion in debt due to the trading firm has delayed the release of IMF funds for the struggling central African country until at least early next year, sources familiar with the matter said. The International Monetary Fund has said Chad's external commercial debt, most of which is to Glencore, was unsustainable as it eats up most of the country's oil revenues. view more

Weak growth, rising debt could trigger deeper downgrades - SARB

Friday 24th November 2017

South Africa's failure to stabilise the country's fiscal situation could see its credit rating downgraded deep into junk territory, the central bank said on Friday, just hours before two rating agencies were due to announce their decisions. Africa's most industrialised economy is on the brink of losing its investment-grade ranking on local currency debt from Moody's and S&P Global Ratings. Both rate it on their lowest investment grade rung of Baa3/BBB-minus. view more
