OUR HERITAGE
Standard Bank South Africa has been built on robust heritage of opportunity, purpose, commitment, empowerment and the courage to believe in yourself.
The bank was established in the 1860s by John Paterson who was a prominent politician and successful businessman of the Cape Colony. He and other Port Elizabeth businessmen wanted to start a new bank. After failing to raise capital in South Africa, Paterson sailed to England and persuaded British investors to back the idea. Standard Bank was established in Port Elizabeth in 1862, which was followed by the development of an extensive branch network.
Initially, Standard Bank's growth in South Africa was fuelled by resource industries - gold, diamonds and agriculture. In 1886, Standard Bank was the first bank to open a branch (in a tent) on the Witwatersrand gold fields in Johannesburg, then known as Ferreira's Camp.
Since then, Standard Bank's growth has been built on strategic rapid expansion. The decision to grow the business beyond South Africa and to start building a franchise on the continent was an early business strategy. This resulted in a long-term goal of positioning the group as an emerging markets financial services provider with a strong African base. The Bank now has an on-the-ground presence in 20 countries on the African continent, and the solid local knowledge required to operate a successful business in Africa.

OUR LEADERSHIP

From the onset, Standard Bank has had a history of quality leadership which is the essential element required to build a sustainable business. These leaders have shared a vision to drive the growth of the bank. Sim Tshabalala, the current chief executive officer, was recently selected as the CEO of the decade in The Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP) Awards 2018.
Significantly, the Bank's leadership ethos extends beyond the top management to all levels of operation. Quality leadership is equally apparent in the Standard Bank leadership team in KwaZulu-Natal where the executive team is well used to leading from the 'trenches'.

Another initiative focuses on the next generation of future leaders. Wealth and Investment Leadership Academies have been established to empower and educate the children of the bank's clients.

OUR DIGITAL PLATFORMS

In addition, Standard Bank prides itself on under-standing the environment in which it operates. Currently this understanding reflects the digital revolution which requires a shift in the way banks enable and connect to clients.
Consequently, the bank has been recognised for its innovative journey towards the 4th industrial revolution and significant investments in technology over the last few years have resulted in the upgrading of the entire core banking system. Standard Bank now uses technology to deliver improved real-time processing of transactions as well as faster service levels.
