Stuart Singleton - Cycling Support On The M4

2019-04-18

Avid cyclist and dealer principal from CMH Nissan Durban, Stuart Singleton, noticed that many cyclists on the M4 Ruth First Highway were without a backup vehicle on Saturdays and Sundays. Many cyclists' families were also worried about them cycling on the M4 especially as most of the rides take place early in the morning. This was especially poignant following the deaths of cyclists, Jared Dwyer (36), Richard da Silva (46) and most recently Craig Diedricks (52).

"As a cyclist myself and being part of Kings Park Cycling, I really felt an initiative was needed," said Singleton.

Singleton spoke with Cyclesphere to sponsor spares, Expand a Sign to sponsor a MEBU (Light Box that is
installed on the vehicle with "Caution Cyclists" and Life Response 24/7 to supply a paramedic to drive the
dealership parts bakkie on the weekend between Durban and Ballito to patrol and be nearby in case of an emergency.

This vehicle is now mobile on the M4 between 5am and 11am every Saturday and Sunday going as far as Ballito and back to Durban again.

"The vehicle is for every cycling club in Durban using the highway. Even if you aren't from a club, cycling along the M4, the vehicle will be there to help if you get into some sort of trouble on the road," said Singelton.

In addition, to the paramedic who will be able to respond to any medical needs, the vehicle carries cycling spares, a puncture kit and a tyre pump in case of a general breakdown.

The first test run was done on Saturday 23rd February and was already put to use when a cyclist with a bee allergy was stung during a training ride. Leon from Life Response 24/7 stayed with the cyclist until his wife came to fetch him and his bike.

Singleton said, "We hope that by providing this free service, we will give cyclists and family members peace of mind that someone is raising awareness for cyclists on the M4. Significantly help is close by whether it is a breakdown, minor or major medical incident. We've also got a dedicated number (083 634
5207) that cyclists can call for assistance."
