Opportunity to teach isiZulu in the United States through U.S. funded 2018 exchange program! Deadline Friday, 31 July!

FLTA is a nine month, non-degree program for early career English language teachers.  During their year in the U.S.  participants assist in up to twenty hours of Zulu language classes a week and are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in U.S. Studies.  Fulbright FLTA participants will also be expected to facilitate cultural events and language clubs.

 

FLTA provides participants the opportunity to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency, and extend their knowledge of the society and culture of the United States while strengthening Zulu language instruction and spreading awareness of South African culture in the U.S. 

 

Note that Fulbright FLTA participants must return to their home country upon completion of the program.  Applicants’ eligibility requirements include:

 

  • Must be early career South African English Language Teachers, or in the last year of training to become English teachers, capable of succeeding in the dual role of teaching assistant and university student.
  • South African citizenship, or permanent residents holding a valid South African passport.
  • Fluency in IsiZulu
  • Fluency in English, demonstrated by a computer-based TOEFL score of 80+ (Note: It is not necessary to take this test before applying. Final nominees will be assisted with taking the TOEFL test by the Fulbright Office).
  • Have a minimum of a four year bachelor’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree plus honors degree by December 2017.
  • Maturity, dependability, integrity, and professionalism.
  • Creativity and self-reliance, team players who are able to maintain excellent relationships with faculty, staff and students.
