(i) Relevant South African case law; (ii) The independence of letters of credit from the underlying contract of sale and the bank-customer contract (and established exceptions to it such as fraud and illegality); (iii) Transferable letters of credit; (iv) Compliance of documents; and (v) The impact of international financial sanctions. Although the main focus of the workshop will not be on the relevant ICC Rules (the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP) and the Uniform Rules for Collections (URC)), they will be dealt with in context of the themes set out above.
