2014-12-10

Here some more pdated reports for KZN.

NATIONAL GROSS DOMESTIC AND GROSS REGIONAL PRODUCT: 3rd QUARTER OF 2014

The release of the 3rd quarter 2014 national GDP results and statistics by Statistics SA (August 2014) enables us to determine the national economic growth rate for the 3rd quarter of 2014. It further allows us to calculate and derive the gross regional product for KwaZulu-Natal for the 3rd quarter of 2014 and the various provincial sectors’ economic growth rates. It must be noted that the national GDP-related calculations and values are based on published data, i.e., actual data. However, the quarterly gross regional product for KwaZulu-Natal and related calculations and values are based on a structural model developed by the author (working paper 14 December 2008) and thus are estimates only.

KwaZulu-Natal Investment Monitor

Confidence in the KwaZulu-Natal economy is still very low because of ongoing uncertainty and difficult conditions for businesses. Even so, the total investment index of the latest KwaZulu-Natal investment monitor, as compiled by Mike Schüssler of Economists.co.za, increased 0.8% year-on-year compared with a 1.4% decline in the previous month. Quarter-on-quarter the index was up by 5.3%.  Four of the six indices in the investment monitor increased, but the investment index has not grown at more than 5% year-on-year for almost two years, reflecting a persistent reluctance among business to commit themselves to big fixed investments. While even slow growth in fixed investment is better than no growth, the recent growth was mostly thanks to two categories of fixed investment which did surprisingly well.

Economic Risk/Conditions Variables
The economic risk/condition variables that are included in the monitor are indicated in the table below. The relative sector weights for the economic risk/condition variables are also displayed and add up to a 100%. The weights at this stage are purely assumed weights and not based on any econometric modelling or calculations simply because of a lack of sufficient time series data. However, it must be mentioned that various weightings have been modelled with very little impact on the overall results.
