OVERVIEW OF KZN LABOUR MARKET – 4th QUARTER 2015
The population of working age is the sum of the labour force plus the not economically
active population or the total number of residents between the age of 15 and 64 at any
particular date or period.
The table below (table 1) shows that the population of working age increased from 6,
360,000 in Q4:2011 to 6,739,000 in Q4:2015, i.e. by 379,000 or by 5.96% over the
period. The labour force, on the other hand, increased from 3,047,000 in Q4:2011 to
3,181,000 in Q4:2015, i.e. by 134,000 or by 3.4% over the period. The number of
people who are not economically active therefore increased from 3,313,000 in 4:2011 to 3,558,000 in Q4:2015, i.e. by 248,000 or by 7.49%. The total increase in the number of not economically active people is equal to the increase in the population of working age minus the increase in the labour force.
