The Engen Refinery (Enref), situated at Wentworth, South Durban, is a division of Engen Petroleum Ltd.  As South Africa's second-biggest refinery, Enref represents a large part of Engen's commitment to help meet the fuel needs of the South African market.

The Refinery has the nominal capacity to refine 125 000 barrels of crude oil per day, substantially reducing the country's dependence on imported refined products - which results in considerable foreign exchange savings.

Engen's core business is the refining of crude oil, the marketing of primary refined petroleum products and the provision of convenience services. Enref has a proud history of growth combined with technical excellence, all designed to ensure that production matches the needs of a changing market place and increasing demands for better products. It injects millions of Rand into the South Durban Basin (SDB) and Durban economies each year in expenses and salaries. The Refinery procures its replacement and new equipment with exception of rotating equipment from the local suppliers.

Although the Refinery has existed since 1954, ongoing investments have been channelled into rebuilds and upgrades. Over the years, new units and processes have been added to increase yields, processing efficiency and product quality, while at the same time meeting increasingly stringent environmental standards. This means the average age of the refinery plant infrastructure is about 25 years, the piping and the process control facilities are just over ten-years old.

Skills

Operating a refinery comes with major challenges.  As a functionally complex, highly capital-intensive operation, strictly ruled by extensive regulations and standards, it must be carefully managed. At the helm of these operations is a skilled team headed by the General Manager, Jehan Zaib, a Chemical Engineer and an MBA graduate.

With vast experience of the petrochemical industry, his career has included working for large well-known corporations including Exxon Mobil and PETRONAS With a strong skills base, the Engen Refinery is on a path of continued growth and greater efficiency with significant successes planned in the coming years

HSEQ

Our staff and the environment enjoy constant focus within our sustainability activities, within a strictly enforced framework of health, safety, environmental and quality practices and principles. As part of the broader Engen sustainability strategy, the Refinery continuously strives to improve management of safety risks to prevent accidents. The success has been achieved through focused training and skills development of both employees and contractors to improve their competencies.

ZeTo Rules

The Enref safety risk management strategy focuses on process safety management and behaviour safety management. Process safety risks include fires, spills and loss of containment. Significant inroads of Process Safety Management implementation with the assistance of some of our veterans and input from staff have been made. As part of continuous improvement, the plan is to continue to implement our DuPont Behaviour safety programme focusing on reducing spills to the environment.
