Durban Chamber - Draft National Youth Policy 2014-2019

2015-01-29

The purpose of this policy is to consolidate youth initiatives that intentionally enhance the capabilities of young people to transform the economy and society they live in by addressing their needs, promoting positive outcomes, opportunities, choices, relationships and support necessary for the holistic development of all young people and in particular those outside the social, political and economic mainstream.

There are two broad areas in which this policy has implications for the private sector, namely:

  • Measures to support youth absorption into employment; work exposure; enterprise and co-operative development; and redressing BEE for young people; and
  • Initiatives to promote education, skills development and second chances for individuals which fail to obtain a matric qualification.

The document makes several recommendations and assigns responsibilities of various interventions to the private sector. The document also makes the assumption that many of the activities which promote youth employment are under-supported by the private sector. It is for this reason that the DCCI will be drafting a submission to the Presidency on this proposed policy.

Please note that this document is merely a summary of the Policy, and does not reflect any views or comments from the DCCI.

Should you wish to make any comments on this Policy, please forward them tosinghs@durbanchamber.co.za by Monday, 16th February 2015, at the latest.

This Policy will be discussed at the Chamber’s Economic Affairs Forum, HR Forum, SMME Forum and Trade and Investment Forums during their February meetings.
