Monday 18th January 2021 South Africa's world-leading 64-dish radio telescope array MeerKAT, which was inaugurated in July 2018, has registered another significant success and again increased our knowledge of the cosmos. In a study published on Monday in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, a team of three scientists from South African and British universities reported that, by using MeerKAT, they had located two previously unknown giant radio galaxies. Significantly, the two new discoveries were both located in the same small area of the sky. Also important was the fact that previous radio telescope surveys of that part of the sky, including by the Karl G Jansky Very Large Array in the US and the Giant Metre-Wave Radio Telescope in India, had failed to detect them. view more

Monday 18th January 2021 Methane emissions from the global oil and gas industry fell by an estimated 10% in 2020 as producers slashed output in response to the historic shock of the Covid-19 crisis, intergovernmental organisation the International Energy Agency (IEA) says, warning that these emissions could rebound strongly without greater action by companies, policy makers and regulators. Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide (CO2) and makes a major contribution to global warming. According to the IEA's 2021 update of its 'Methane Tracker', oil and gas operations worldwide emitted more than 70-million tonnes of methane into the atmosphere last year. This is broadly equivalent to the total energy-related CO2 emissions from the entire European Union. view more
