Industrial group Barloworld is optimistic that qualifying black South Africans will respond positively to its offer to buy a maximum of 30% of the shares available in a new black-owned property company, called Khula Sizwe Property Holdings, being created as part of a larger R3.5-billion broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) transaction. The property component of the transaction involves the sale by Barloworld of 68 mostly industrial properties across South Africa to Khula Sizwe. The transaction will also be accompanied by a ten-year triple-net lease with Barloworld South Africa and Barloworld Logistics, escalating at 8% a year. view more

Bank report points to transport being next decarbonisation frontier

Newly released research by international banking group HSBC outlines a scenario for reducing transport emissions by 76% by 2040 through combining technology and regulation in a way that results in electricity, hydrogen and biofuels replacing oil as the primary fuel feedstock across transport modes. South Africa's fleet of utility-scale variable renewable energy plants contributed to limiting the extent of load-shedding instituted by Eskom during the first quarter of 2019 by 46%, new analysis by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research research shows. The report adds that, absent the instantaneous contributions from the VRE fleet of up to 2.3 GW during those periods when rotational cuts were made, Eskom would have been forced to raise the level of load-shedding instituted from Stage 4 to Stage 5, or even Stage 6. view more

South African Reserve Bank subsidiary South African Mint Company has launched an "SA25 - Celebrating South Africa" coin series, which commemorates the rights and freedoms espoused by the country's Constitution. This week, 25 years ago, South Africa held its first democratic elections. The SA Mint is issuing the new collectable coins in base metals, sterling silver and pure gold. The share prices of South Africa's two largest mobile operators, MTN and Vodacom, fell on Wednesday, after the Competition Commission announced that international benchmarking had confirmed that the country performs poorly in terms of data pricing, with unnecessarily high prices, particularly for mobile prepaid data. Competition Commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele told media at the release of a provisional report on the commission's Data Services Market Inquiry, that the country's prepaid mobile data prices faired poorly internationally and among its Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, or Brics, and Southern African Development Community, peers, noting, in particular, that MTN and Vodacom have lower data prices in other markets in which they operate. view more
