Progress on Eskom's proposed Short-Term Power Purchase Programme, initiated to help limit load-shedding while the State-owned utility implements a so-called reliability maintenance programme across its coal fleet over the coming 18 months, is being seriously retarded by South Africa's Covid-19 lockdown. The bidding deadline for the programme, which is led by Eskom's GM for energy planning and market development, Callie Fabricius, was initially extended from April 30 to May 11. It was then further extended to July 2 at the request of the National Treasury. view more

Public Enterprises welcomes yes vote for SAA rescue plan, announces interim CEO

The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) welcomed the outcome of the creditors' vote on the proposed business rescue plan for State-owned South African Airways (SAA). The financially beleaguered national flag carrier is under business rescue. In the vote on Tuesday, 86% of the creditors voted in favour of the plan. "The DPE believes that the favourable vote is a much better outcome for creditors and SAA employees than liquidation, and the government remains confident that the implementation of the business rescue plan will balance the rights and interests of all parties," it affirmed. view more

Public Enterprises DG argues saving SAA will be good for the country

The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) has released the text of the remarks made at the meeting of the creditors of State-owned national flag carrier South African Airways (SAA) on Tuesday, by its acting director-general, Kgathatso Tlhakudi. SAA is under business rescue and at the meeting the creditors voted in favour of the proposed business rescue plan for the airline. He started by denying that the effort to save SAA had been a vanity project by the DPE or the National Treasury. He affirmed that rescuing the airline was good for the country. He assured that the government and business rescue practitioners had made use of credible and internationally respected "resources" to help with the expertise needed for the rescue plan to succeed. He affirmed that the DPE had been "humbled by the support of organised labour". view more
