Hulamin reviews extrusions business, rolled products reaches record volumes

JSE-listed aluminium supplier and exporter Hulamin's rolled products division reported a "superb" manufacturing performance for the year ended December 31, 2018, increasing its sales by 6% to 228 000 t. This third consecutive year of record sales volumes from rolled products helped to offset the poorer performance of the company's extrusions division. South Africa's State-owned electricity company Eskom continued implementing rolling blackouts on Tuesday as its crippled generating units struggled to supply enough power in a crisis likely to further hurt the ailing economy. In its latest statement Eskom said it was implementing "stage 2" load-shedding until 9 am on Tuesday morning, which effectively involves suppressing 2 000 MW of demand at a given time to avoid collapsing the national grid, after applying "stage 4" rotational powercuts which require taking 4 000 MW of demand off the grid for about 14 hours on Monday. view more

Mandatory, compulsory programmes launched in response to systemic challenges facing govt departments

In direct response to the systemic challenges facing government departments, the National School of Government's (NSG's) mandatory and compulsory programmes were launched on Monday, in Pretoria. The launch follows President Cyril Ramaphosa's statement during his State of Nation Address last month, that "in improving the capabilities of public servants, the NSG [will] introduce a suite of compulsory courses, covering areas like ethics and anticorruption, senior management and supply chain management, [as well as the] deployment of managers to the coal face to strengthen service delivery". view more

Ascendis Health records strengthened interim gross margin

Ascendis Health's gross margin for the six months ended December 31, 2018, strengthened by 260 basis points to 44.9%, mainly owing to improved raw material pricing through strategic sourcing in Farmalider and Remedica, the discontinuation of low-margin products in the Wellness, Biosciences and Pharma divisions, the acquisition of the high-margin Kyron Laboratories (Kyron) business and improved selling prices in Biosciences owing to rand weakness. In the months ahead, the company's management plans to maintain its strong focus on organic revenue and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) growth, as well as cash conversion, while addressing areas of underperformance in the South African operations and accelerating its Scitec plans. view more
