Thursday 12th December 2019 The Energy Intensive Users Group of Southern Africa (EIUG) reiterated on Thursday that its members had several options available to alleviate South Africa's electricity supply constraints, while warning that the risk of load-shedding would persist until new supply- and demand-side solutions were identified to create sustained reserve capacity. The EIUG, which includes mining and industrial enterprises that collectively consume about 40% of South Africa's electrical energy, said in a statement that the options included leveraging private balance sheets to build new generation capacity. view more
Thursday 12th December 2019 Eskom Holdings, South Africa's biggest polluter, has asked for additional emission exemptions at two of its biggest plants, a request that will increase environmental protests against the State-owned utility at a time when it's already being slammed for rolling power cuts. Eskom, which is struggling to meets its costs and has R454-billion in debt, has applied to the environment ministry to delay complying with sulphur dioxide emission limits at its Medupi coal-fired plant by five years. Thursday 12th December 2019 When South Africa's State-owned utility announced record power cuts on Monday afternoon, Impala Platinum Holdings had two hours to hoist thousands of workers from 1 km deep shafts. The deepening crisis at debt-ridden Eskom Holdings shut down South Africa's key mining industry for 24 hours, hitting gold and platinum producers that had been enjoying a renaissance on the back of higher metal prices. The rolling blackouts threaten to tip South Africa's economy into recession and hobble miners already impacted by community protests and xenophobic violence. view more
Thursday 12th December 2019 The City of Cape Town has written to the minister of mineral resources and energy asking that it and other municipalities be permitted to buy electricity directly from independent power producers, avoiding a pending court case. Acting mayor Ian Neilson said in a statement on Wednesday that if Mantashe is serious about implementing immediate measures to resolve the load shedding crisis he would agree to the city's request. "We need immediate action now and Minister Gwede Mantashe needs to show leadership and put the well-being of South Africans and our economy first," Neilson said. On Tuesday, in the wake of the implementation of stage 6 load shedding, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy released a short statement saying it would be introducing "immediate measures" to increase access to energy supply. This included the promised promulgation of section 34 determinations. view more
