Eskom to seek authorisation to proceed with repurposing of four coal stations

State-owned electricity producer Eskom aims, within the coming months, to seek authorisation from its board and government to initiate a formal bidding process for the repurposing and repowering of the Camden, Komati, Grootvlei and Hendrina coal-fired power stations using lower-carbon generation technologies. All units at the four stations, which currently employ some 1 530 people directly, are scheduled to stop producing electricity between 2021 and 2028. view more

A member of South Africa's National Planning Commission has called for the Presidential Climate Change Coordinating Commission to be established, arguing that such a multi-stakeholder institutional platform is required to implement the just transition vision outlined in the country's National Development Plan. Tasneem Essop, who was instrumental in writing the NDP chapter dealing with environmental sustainability and South Africa's transition to a low-carbon economy, stressed during a virtual dialogue on July 7 that the principles for the just transition have already been agreed and that the focus should, thus, shift to implementation. view more

Renergen believes Virginia project could relieve global helium shortage woes

Emerging natural gas and helium producer Renergen says its Virginia project, in South Africa's Free State province, has the potential to be the answer to the world's helium shortage woes following a recent helium prospective resources report, which confirms that the project has undiscovered gross recoverable helium volumes of more than 344-billion cubic feet (bcf). With the world consuming an average of 80 t of helium a day, Renergen CEO Stefano Marani tells Engineering News that the report has given the company the necessary data to begin planning Phase 2 of the project, "and [the company's] intention is that Phase 2 will supply enough helium to overcome long-term shortfalls". view more

UJ engineers develop 3D-printed ventilator that supports multiple patients

An engineering team from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has designed and developed a portable 3D-printed mechanical ventilator that has a customisable base plate to treat multiple patients. Public Enterprises calls on unions to agree among themselves on SAA's future

The Department of Public Enterprises has urged unions representing employees of financially-embattled State-owned airline South African Airways to hold bilateral meetings among themselves to establish an agreed future for the carrier. SAA was under business rescue and its creditors were scheduled to vote on the business rescue plan for the airline on July 14.  The DPE reported that it had held separate meetings with all the SAA unions and with representatives of the airline's non-unionised staff. Of the seven unions represented at SAA, four plus the non-unionised staff representatives have accepted in principle the voluntary severance packages being offered by the DPE to SAA employees.  view more

South Africa's consumer confidence crashes to lowest level since 1985

Consumer confidence in South Africa plunged to its lowest in about 35 years during the second quarter of 2020, dragged down by the outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent severe restrictions to almost all non-essential economic activity, a survey showed on Tuesday. The First National Bank/Bureau of Economic Research Consumer confidence index tumbled from an already depressed level of -9 in the first three months of this year to -33 during the second quarter, just three index points shy of the all-time lowest level recorded in 1985. view more
