Enel celebrates its Tom Burke solar plant

Some three years after expanding operations into South Africa, Italian renewable energy firm Enel Green Power (EGP) has established a significant presence locally, boasting more than 520 MW of wind and solar projects in operation, one of which was declared a National Key Point in June. The 66 MW Tom Burke photovoltaic power (PV) plant, in Limpopo, where Enel hosted a dedication ceremony on Wednesday for one of its first large-scale solar projects, feeds 122 GWh/y into the national grid and is supplying electricity to nine villages in the Lephalale region. view more

Eskom's unsustainable business model in need of proactive reform - Eberhard

State-owned power utility Eskom is stuck in a "classic utility death spiral" that many power companies worldwide face as the pressure to adopt new business models and proactively reform increases. Eskom's need for higher tariffs to offset declining electricity sales amid ever-rising costs is having the unintended effect of incentivising consumers to use less electricity. view more

'Rebasing' for lower Eskom sales to trigger 9.4% hike even before any revenue adjustment

State-owned electricity utility Eskom has sounded that warning that, even if its allowable revenue is not increased at all for the 2018/19 year, tariffs will still need to rise by 9.4% simply to accommodate a "rebasing" electricity sales volumes when compared with those approved in the third multiyear price determination period (MYPD3). The utility has made a single-year application to National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for allowable revenue of R219.5-billion, which would translate to a hike of 19.9% from April 1 for direct customers and 27.5% for municipalities from July 1. view more

ARA recommits to 2020 clean fuels policy

The African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARA) on Thursday confirmed its commitment to the 2020 clean fuel policy, which outlined a plan for vehicle emission controls and standards to achieve all the benefits of clean air quality. Following a clean fuels workshop in Togo last week, the ARA set out recommendations as the industry worked towards meeting the AFRI-4 specifications by 2020. view more

Sasol proposes new R21bn BBBEE ownership transaction

JSE-listed Sasol on Wednesday announced a proposed new R21-billion broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) ownership transaction, Sasol Khanyisa, which will replace Sasol's debt-ridden Sasol Inzalo fund, which expires in June 2018. When Sasol Inzalo lapses, it will not be able to distribute shares to participants, given the closing Sasol ordinary share price of R389 on September 4. view more

Gauteng freeway toll network nearly at capacity, says Sanral

IFC provides $150m loan to assist BMW SA's production plans

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank, will assist in financing BMW Group South Africa's (BMW SA's) R6-billion investment in its Rosslyn plant, set to produce the new BMW X3. The $150 million loan comes as South Africa "seeks new sources of economic growth after a period of slowdown, driven in part by sluggish mining and manufacturing sectors", says the IFC in a statement. view more

Ramaphosa leads SA delegation to London to bid for 2023 Rugby World Cup

As part of South Africa's bid to host the Rugby World Cup 2023 tournament, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and a high-level delegation will make their way to London on Sunday to make a presentation to the World Rugby Council.   The delegation will consist of Sport and Recreation Minister Thulas Nxesi and his Deputy Minister Gert Oosthuizen, as well as SA Rugby President Mark Alexander and Chief Executive Officer Jurie Roux, who will lay out South Africa's technically and commercially compelling case to host the tournament. South Africa will make its presentation on Monday, September 25 and will be up against contenders Ireland and France.  view more

Tlou submits plans for Botswana power plant

ASX- and Aim-listed Tlou Energy has submitted a proposal to the Botswana Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security to develop up to 100 MW of coalbed methane- (CBM-) fuelled pilot power plants in the African country. The government of Botswana earlier this year requested proposals for the development of CBM-fuelled pilot power plants, aimed at assisting the development of a CBM gas industry in the country. view more
