As South Africa heads towards a peak in coronavirus (Covid-19) infections, President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the sale of alcohol across the country will be suspended and a nationwide curfew will be re-instituted.  "As we head towards the peak of infections, it is vital that we do not burden our clinics and hospitals with alcohol-related injuries that could have been avoided. This is a fight to save every life and we need to save every bed. We have therefore decided that in order to conserve hospital capacity the sale, dispensing and distribution of alcohol will be suspended with immediate effect," Ramaphosa said in a televised address on Sunday evening.  view more

Infrastructure at core of business' R3.4-trillion economic recovery proposal

Business for South Africa released an economic recovery strategy paper on July 10 that includes a list of 12 priority initiatives, many infrastructure-related, which the formation argues could bolster gross domestic product by R1-trillion, create up to 1.5-million jobs and increase yearly tax revenues by R100-billion in the coming three years. It also called for the establishment of a Joint Reconstruction Task Team to coordinate the implementation of the recovery plan, which would require public and private funding of R3.4-trillion over the coming three years. view more

ANC suggests pension funds take some Eskom assets

Majority of IPPs said to agree to refinancing initiative

Pan African board approves development of 10 MW solar plant at Elikhulu

The board of gold-mining company Pan African has approved the development of a 10 MW solar photovoltaic project at the Elikhulu gold-from-tailings operation in Evander, Mpumalanga, the London-, Johannesburg- and now also New York-listed Pan African stated on Friday. Earlier this month, the midtier gold producer announced that it had established a sponsored Level-1 American depository receipt programme on the over-the-counter market in the US with the Bank of New York Mellon being the appointed depository. Public Enterprises warns SAA pilots that their business rescue proposals are unaffordable

The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) has expressed its appreciation for the cooperation and commitment of the pilots of South African Airways (SAA), expressed through the SAA Pilot's Association (SAAPA), during the business rescue process for the beleaguered State-owned national flag carrier. The DPE has also "noted" that SAAPA has endorsed the voluntary severance packages (VSPs) that will be offered to each SAA employee should the proposed business rescue plan be approved by the airline's creditors on July 14. However, the DPE also expressed concern that the SAAPA was seeking benefits for its members that would, in the Department's words, be "far more costly, more lucrative and financially rewarding for the pilots than any other class of employees at SAA". The DPE could not agree to the SAAPA's proposals. view more
