The Presidency and the National Treasury have established a formal structure in an effort to accelerate the implementation of structural reforms that, together with the recently launched Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan, are at the heart of renewed efforts to boost South Africa's flagging economic growth. The National Treasury now expects the economy, which has been underperforming for more than a decade, to contract by 7.8% in 2020, instead of the 7.2% slump forecast by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni in his June Supplementary Budget. view more

Mboweni agrees to SAA's R10.5bn bailout; no funds for SABC, Post Office and Denel

South African Airways will get the R10.5-billion it has requested from government to fund its business rescue process. The monies will be made available from reductions from national departments and their entities as well as reductions from local and provincial conditional grants, according to the medium-term budget policy statement which Finance Minister Tito Mboweni tabled in Parliament on Wednesday. The R10.5-billion is in addition to the R6.5-billion that SAA was allocated in the Budget 2020 for settling its guaranteed debt and interest. The national carrier, which is insolvent, needs R19.6-billion to implement its business rescue plan. SAA was placed in business rescue in December 2019, this as it faced a liquidity crisis. Overall the global aviation industry has taken a beating due to the Covid-19 pandemic which led to travel restrictions. view more

Boland Cellar commissions 473 kW crowdfunded solar installation

Vivo Energy, Robex to set up a solar plant at Mali mine

Canadian mining company Robex Resources and Vivo Energy, which sells and distributes Shell- and Engen-branded fuels and lubricants in Africa, have reached an agreement for Vivo Energy to supply solar energy to the Nampala gold mine, in Mali, for a period of five to fifteen years. The project will result in the construction of a 3.9 MW solar photovoltaic power plant, with a battery storage capacity of 2.6 MWh which, owing to the energy management system, will be fully integrated into the mine's existing thermal power plant. view more
