Mboweni's budget unlikely to stop South Africa's march to junk

Monday 24th February 2020

Of 19 economists surveyed by Bloomberg this month, 14 expect Moody's to downgrade the country to junk this year and nine of those say it'll happen in the first half. That's after the ratings company in November cut the outlook on the nation's assessment to negative and said it would look to the Feb. 26 budget for a feasible strategy to contain rising debt. view more

Amplats throws light on PGM substitution, electric vehicle prospects, community dividends

Monday 24th February 2020

The platinum industry could very easily experience an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) switching from palladium to platinum in the short term, platinum group metals (PGMs) were unlikely to be used in battery electric vehicles soon and communities are sharing considerably in the latest dividend windfall of Anglo American Platinum (Amplats). Outgoing Anglo American Platinum CEO Chris Griffith made these points in response to questions put by Mining Weekly on the current slowness in the switch from palladium to platinum by the automotive industry, the chances of PGMs being used in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) any time soon, and not only in fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), and the extent to which communities will share in Amplats' latest large dividend windfall.
