High Commissioner 'seized' with avoiding post-Brexit trade interruption with South Africa

Friday 23rd June 2017

British High Commissioner to South Africa Nigel Casey says he is currently "very seized" with ensuring that measures are put in place "timeously" to guarantee no interruption in the trade relationship between the UK and South Africa when Britain leaves the European Union (EU) on March 29, 2019. Speaking at a British Chamber of Business in Southern Africa function this week, Casey, who took up the position in April, described the trade relationship as "balanced and increasingly symbiotic" in nature. Yearly trade between South Africa and the UK stood at around £10-billion which was also significantly larger that Britain's yearly trade flows with other key emerging markets such as Brazil and Indonesia. view more

'Stifling legislation' preventing SA drones industry from gaining altitude

Friday 23rd June 2017

Drones, or remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), have the potential to benefit numerous industries and could have contributed billions of rands this year, had it not been for what a newly released report implies as the stifling legislative and regulatory environment for unmanned aerial vehicles in South Africa. Commissioned by local drone services and consulting company United Drone Holdings, the report has been written by economist Dr Roelof Botha, who made the findings public to industry stakeholders during the inaugural Drone Con 2017 event, which was held in Gauteng earlier this month. view more

Global aviation industry increasing focus on cyber threats

Friday 23rd June 2017

The global aviation industry is increasingly focusing on cybersecurity. "Cybersecurity ... has become a major concern," highlighted International Air Transport Association (IATA) Regional VP: Africa and the Middle East Muhammad Ali Albakri at recent media briefing at OR Tambo International Airport, east of Johannesburg. "Cybersecurity is so complex," he pointed out. It involves systems used by airports, air traffic navigation service (air traffic control) providers, airlines, airliners and manufacturers. "Part of the challenge in the aviation industry is the challenge of exchanging [cybersecurity] information. That doesn't happen today." With cyber attacks on companies across all economic sectors, worldwide, happening "every day", this is not a theoretical concern. "This is a growing threat. A new threat," he observed. The aviation sector was still trying to get to grips with it. "These things can happen anywhere. They could happen to anyone, any airline." view more

PwC Tower receives commendation in Fulton Awards

Friday 23rd June 2017

The PwC Tower, in Midrand, which is nearing completion, has received a commendation in the buildings greater than three storeys category at the 2017 biennial Fulton Awards, hosted by the Concrete Society of South Africa. The PwC Tower is the twenty-fourth tallest twisted building in the world and the only twisted building in Africa. Arup was the structural consultant responsible for achieving the iconic twist in the tower, as well as for designing the façade, with the project being submitted for consideration by construction materials provider AfriSam and admixtures manufacturer Chryso SA. The judges' citation highlighted that "the design solution balanced gravity loads on the corner columns and reduced the torsion on the core of the tower, making stresses on the core wall decrease by a factor of four. This meant that the structure used a 450 mm core wall that is a similar thickness to what a typical straight tower of that height would have needed. view more

Afrimat Construction Index continues to outperform general economy

Thursday 22nd June 2017

Despite negative perceptions, South Africa's economy remains resilient, while the construction industry remains healthy and continues to perform well, says Afrimat CEO Andries van Heerden.
