Tuesday 17th October 2017

McKinsey said on Tuesday it was embarrassed by errors it made while working with South African utility Eskom on a R1.6-billion contract that is being investigated by Parliament and police over allegations of fraud. Privately-held McKinsey, the world's largest management consultancy, said it had parted ways with some staff involved in its work at Eskom in 2016 with Trillian, a local consultancy controlled at the time by members of the Gupta family, billionaire friends of President Jacob Zuma. view more

South Africa's Public Investment Corporation, one of the continent's largest asset managers, has not ruled out investing in struggling state-owned airline SAA, its chief executive said on Tuesday. Van market retreats as economy takes toll on small businesses, households

Tuesday 17th October 2017

The total South African new van market currently ranges between 19 000 and 20 000 units a year, estimates Mercedes-Benz Vans Southern Africa VP Nadia Trimmel. "Historically, the market used to be between 22 000 and 23 000 units, but this year we do not expect it to break 20 000. The general feeling is that the van market will be slightly down this year on last year, while we expect our sales to remain stable. The new V-Class is doing well for us, as there is no real competitor in this segment," says Trimmel.
"If you exclude the minibus taxi market, the van market is between 4 000 and 5 000 units a year." view more

Sending right economic signals key to integration of distributed energy resources

Monday 16th October 2017

The transition from centralised electricity systems to ones that increasingly comprise both large-scale centralised resources and distributed energy resources (DERs) is under way globally. However, to successfully manage the shift will depend substantially on sending the right economic signals, a leading Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) energy academic argues. In fact, Professor Ignacio Pérez-Arriaga, who is visiting professor at the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research and a leading contributor to MIT's 'Utility of the Future' research effort, likens the human body to the emerging electricity system, where a comprehensive system of "efficient tariffs and regulated charges" acts as the nervous system. view more

MeerKAT telescope takes part in start of new era of astronomy

Monday 16th October 2017

South Africa's MeerKAT radio telescope array, although still under construction, has successfully participated in an unprecedented international collaboration that has opened a new era in astronomy. For the first time, a major astronomical event - the collision of two neutron stars - has been observed in both the electromagnetic spectrum and by gravity waves. The US Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (Ligo), which is composed of two sets of detectors, at Hanford in Washington state and at Livingston, Louisiana, detected a gravitational wave source (designated GW170817) on August 17. Almost immediately afterwards, the same wave was detected by the six-country European collaborative Virgo gravity wave observatory, near Pisa in Tuscany, Italy, and then, about two seconds later, the US National Aeronautics and Space Agency's Fermi space telescope detected a gamma ray burst from the same area. The observations by the thee gravity wave detectors on two continents, followed by the observation of the gamma ray burst by the space telescope, allowed a triangulation of the source. This, in turn, permitted follow-up observations by some 70 optical, infrared, ultraviolet, radio, and X-ray telescopes, on both the Earth and in space. view more
