Monday 26th June 2017

The Musina Intermodal Terminal (MIT), launched on Monday, is set to reduce the cost of cross-border trade, especially for bulk commodities, on the North-South trade corridor. The terminal, about 3 km outside Musina and about 13 km from the Beitbridge border post, will serve to move commodities, including coal, copper, nickel and chrome, as well as citrus, maize and tomatoes, from road to rail, and vice versa. view more

'Significant implications' for design of African power markets as renewables prices fall

Monday 26th June 2017

Recent renewable energy price reductions, together with sub-Saharan Africa's (SSA's) formidable solar and wind resources, have made solar and wind technologies the cheapest sources of power in several countries, which carries significant implications, a newly published academic paper argues, for how the region's relatively undeveloped power systems are designed. Titled 'Independent Power Projects (IPP) in Sub-Saharan Africa: Investment trends and policy lessons', the paper has been co-authored by the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business's professor Anton Eberhard, independent consultant Katharine Gratwick, as well as Elvira Morella and Pedro Antmann, both of the World Bank. view more

Premium market in for another tough year; Audi's first EV coming to SA

Monday 26th June 2017

The South African new premium car market will this year probably decline by another 7% to 15%, to between 55 000 and 60 000 units, down from the roughly 65 000 units recorded last year. This follows a 20% drop in the domestic new premium car market in 2016, says Audi South Africa (SA) head Trevor Hill. view more

Kaap Agri lists on JSE

Monday 26th June 2017

Agricultural retailer Kaap Agri has listed on the JSE's main board. "Listing on the JSE helps make Kaap Agri visible to a wider investor audience, which will draw in additional liquidity. The listing will also provide a platform for Kaap Agri to use its script for accretive merger and acquisition activities alongside organic growth," MD Sean Walsh said at the listing on Monday.   He added that Kaap Agri, which is listed in the Speciality Retailer sector, was confident that it would be able to reach its target of minimum yearly growth of 15% in headline earnings a share over the next three years. view more

Executive pay under scrutiny in Deloitte report

Monday 26th June 2017

With the growing inequality between organisations' top brass and their general workforce under intense scrutiny, consulting and advisory firm Deloitte has found that increases to CEOs' guaranteed pay over the last five increase periods have exceeded inflation by a considerable margin,  with significant yearly cash bonuses - in relation to guaranteed pay - paid to CEOs and CFOs over the last six years, according to the firm's Executive Compensation Report. "Our analysis uncovered some key trends that, in our view, definitely provide vitriol to the debate, and are not well addressed in the disclosure within remuneration reports, which provide little or no explanation as to the cause or reason for these trends," notes Deloitte actuarial, rewards and analytics leader Leslie Yuill, pointing out that guaranteed pay levels for CEOs is one of those trends. view more

Greenhouse tightening as govt imposes Paris agreement - Exxaro

Monday 26th June 2017

The legislative changes around emission of greenhouse gases is becoming more onerous as the South African government implements the Paris Agreement, diversified black-owned resources group Exxaro said on Monday, when the coal-mining major announced that "good progress" had been made finalising its replacement black economic empowerment (BEE) transaction. In reiterating Earthlife Africa Johannesburg's successful legal proceedings to set aside the environmental authorisation for the company's proposed 600 MW Thabametsi coal-fired power station near Lephalale, Exxaro said it would continue monitoring the progress of this legal procedure at a time when the Environmental Affairs Minister would be considering a climate impact assessment report in making the revised environmental authorisation determination for the project. view more

Finance platforms available to SMMEs, entrepreneurs need to take a more involved approach

Monday 26th June 2017

It is not a lack of or access to development financing in South Africa that is holding back small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs), but rather entrepreneurs' understanding of and approach toward accessing financing, a panel of speakers told delegates at the Small Business Indaba on Monday. Access to finance has long been a sticking point for many SMMEs and entrepreneurs, who have often called on government and development institutions to open up access to the funding that could ensure the survival of SMMEs. view more

Number of South African SMMEs growing

Monday 26th June 2017

As an emerging country boasting more than 5.6-million small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs), South Africa needs to find ways to increase the contribution of these game changers to the nation's economic structure. While there is a lack of reliable data available to help government conduct sector analysis and design policy interventions to assist SMMEs, existing data sources showed there was an indicative upward swing in the number of SMMEs scattered across the country, said Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) Gauteng provincial manager Colin Leshou. view more
