SA municipalities expect budget deficit of R4.7bn in 2018/19 - Treasury

The revenue for South African municipalities is expected to rise to R431.5-billion in 2019/20 and R462.5-billion in 2020/21 from a budgeted R404.6-billion for 2018/19, the National Treasury said on Thursday. In a statement on the medium term revenue and expenditure framework for municipalities, the Treasury said total municipal expenditure in 2018/19 was estimated at R441.6-billion, up 5.7 percent from 2017/18, and would increase to R467.9-billion in 2019/20 and R495-billion in 2020/21. view more

Eskom highlights risk of further debt accumulation as it gears up to defend big hikes

Debt-laden electricity utility Eskom is preparing for yet another bruising encounter with consumers in the coming months, during which it will seek to justify it latest R762-billion, three-year revenue application. If successful with its fourth multiyear price determination (MYPD4) application, Eskom would be entitled to implement three yearly tariff hikes of 15% for the 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial years. The outcome would be a rise in the standard tariff from 93.79c/kWh currently to 142.65c/kWh by the end of the tariff period. view more

Municipalities' unpaid water bills increase to a whopping R13.1bn

Municipalities that do not pay their water bills have run up a whopping R13.1bn debt - an amount just R2bn short of the entire annual budget of the Department of Water and Sanitation. China lending to sub-Saharan Africa can support growth, but brings risks - Moody's

China's increased lending to governments in sub-Saharan Africa has the potential to support economic growth, but also amplifies credit risks for countries with high debt, ratings agency Moody's has said. Investment pledges will add about R338bn to South Africa's economic growth - PwC

The efficiency of securing regulatory compliance and the speed at which small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are paid by private companies and public organisations were on Wednesday cited as some of the biggest concerns for small businesses. Speaking at the Small Business Institute (SBI) SME Indaba, in Bryanston, SBI chairperson Bernard Swanepoel pointed to the National Development Plan (NDP) goal of the small business segment supporting 90% of all new jobs created and emphasised that this implied that the responsibility was shifted back to small businesses and small business organisations and chambers. view more
