Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown has called on the new interim leadership of embattled power utility Eskom to give priority attention to addressing the management of contracts, conflicts of interest and the quality of coal being supplied to its power stations. Speaking following the Eskom annual general meeting at Megawatt Park on Friday, Brown released the names of four new board members on Friday, bringing to nine the number of individuals appointed to the interim board, which had been depleted to just five members prior to the meeting. view more

High Commissioner 'seized' with avoiding post-Brexit trade interruption with South Africa

British High Commissioner to South Africa Nigel Casey says he is currently "very seized" with ensuring that measures are put in place "timeously" to guarantee no interruption in the trade relationship between the UK and South Africa when Britain leaves the European Union (EU) on March 29, 2019. Speaking at a British Chamber of Business in Southern Africa function this week, Casey, who took up the position in April, described the trade relationship as "balanced and increasingly symbiotic" in nature. Yearly trade between South Africa and the UK stood at around £10-billion which was also significantly larger that Britain's yearly trade flows with other key emerging markets such as Brazil and Indonesia. view more

Parliament opposes calls to change Reserve Bank mandate

The South African Parliament will launch a court challenge against an anti-graft watchdog's recommendation of constitutional changes to alter the mandate of the central bank, it said. The legislative assembly joined the central bank and lender Barclays Africa in seeking a court review of Public Protector Busi Mkhwebane's proposal to change the central bank's primary mandate of maintaining currency and price stability to focus on economic growth. view more

South Africa's transport industry is not immune to the challenges faced by State-owned enterprises (SOEs), according to Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi, who told a media briefing on Friday that the legislative framework for SOEs in South Africa was inadequate, conflicting and duplicitous. Delivering a presentation on the performance in the 2015/16 financial year of SOEs that fall under the Department of Transport, Maswanganyi stated that South Africa had no "common agenda" for understanding State-owned enterprises (SOEs). view more

Business rights watchdog AfriBusiness will consult with its legal team to determine the way forward after State-owned Eskom reportedly refused to provide it with information on the R2-billion fine imposed on Tegeta Resources' Optimum coal mine. Following a period of arbitration, Eskom and Tegeta in April agreed to a settlement regarding a R2.2-billion penalty claim against Optimum, which had arisen in a dispute over coal quality when Glencore was still the owner of Optimum. view more

New CEO at Audi South Africa (Audi SA), Trevor Hill, says the German premium brand will, by the end of July, stop providing detailed new-vehicle sales numbers to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). This announcement follows in the footsteps of Mercedes Benz South Africa (MBSA) and BMW Group South Africa (BMW SA) which have already halted reporting detailed sales numbers, issuing only a single number for car sales, commercial vehicle sales and export sales, respectively. view more

As construction giant Group Five officially issues a notice of a planned extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on July 24, to reconstitute the board, five directors are set to step down. Global atomic agency selects South African for key regulatory post

South Africa's National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) CEO Dr Bismark Tyobeka has been appointed chairperson of the Regulatory Cooperation Forum (RCF) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the NNR announced on Friday. The appointment was decided at the annual RCF Steering Committee meeting in Brussels, Belgium, which took place from June 13 to June 15. Tyobeka had previously (from 2014) been vice chairperson of the RCF. In its press release, the NNR noted that his previous position as vice chairperson was one of the reasons Tyobeka was appointed chairperson. This ensured continuity in the work of the RCF. view more

The Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council's management committee has agreed to appoint a subcommittee to attempt resolving the disputes declared by employers and trade unions in the metals and engineering sector. Negotiations to conclude a wage agreement and an agreement on conditions of employment had deadlocked on June 15, with trade unions declaring a dispute against the employers and the employers declaring a counter-dispute against the trade unions. view more
