High Court Judge Fayeeza Kathree-Setiloane will decide next week whether to grant the National Energy Regulator of South Africa leave to appeal her July 28 judgment, which found the regulator's decision to deduct a R69-billion equity injection into Eskom from its allowable revenue for the period 2019/20 to 2021/22 to be illegal. Kathree-Setiloane also ruled that the full amount be added back over the coming three years and that the first R23-billion be added during the 2021/22 financial year. view more

BLSA's Mavuso calls for urgency in implementation of economic recovery plan

Comair's business rescue plan has been approved

The proposed business rescue plan for private sector airline group Comair was approved by a decisive majority on Friday. Comair operates the British Airways in South Africa and Kulula low cost carrier brands. The preferred investment consortium for the group is composed of several former members of the Comair board and executive management. This consortium will inject new equity of R500-million into the group and receive 99% of its shareholding in return (after the business rescue plan's suspensive conditions have been met). Up to 15% of the shareholding will be transferred to an appropriate broad-based black economic empowerment partner within 12 months. view more

UIF TERS payments to resume

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is set to resume its Covid-19 Temporary Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) benefits payments on September 21. UIF acting commissioning Marsha Bronkhorst said a payment plan would be run for all outstanding payments for April, May and June over September 21 and 22, after which payments from July 1 to August 15 will be run across September 23 through to September 26. view more

Govt commits to provide SAA with R10.5bn - administrator

South Africa has pledged R10.5-billion to South African Airways, one of the administrators of the ailing state-owned airline said on Friday. The administrators took control of SAA in December after almost a decade of financial losses and have been trying to keep it afloat as the coronavirus pandemic compounds its longstanding problems. Administrators published a restructuring plan in June, but the more than R10-billion required for it to work has not materialised since the airline's creditors approved it in July. Administrator Siviwe Dongwana told a creditor meeting called to discuss the funding issue on Friday: "We have since received a further communication from government with the support of the National Treasury that indicate that there is a very clear cabinet commitment to provide funding to SAA to the tune of R10.5-billion." view more
