Eskom to seek special procurement dispensation to help it address 'crisis'

Crisis-ridden power utility Eskom is approaching the Auditor-General and the National Treasury to seek approval for a special procurement dispensation that will allow it to accelerate the purchase of critical goods and services required to address ongoing breakdowns of its coal fleet. The underperformance of Eskom's aging and under maintained fleet of 15 coal-fired power stations - along with the fact that the units in commercial operation at the new Medupi and Kusile coal stations were prone to tripping and were delivering only 40% of their rated capacity -  is the main contributor to South Africa's current bout of confidence-sapping load-shedding. view more

Hulamin reviews extrusions business, rolled products reaches record volumes

JSE-listed aluminium supplier and exporter Hulamin's rolled products division reported a "superb" manufacturing performance for the year ended December 31, 2018, increasing its sales by 6% to 228 000 t. This third consecutive year of record sales volumes from rolled products helped to offset the poorer performance of the company's extrusions division. Numsa members continue strike at AMSA

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has met with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to help resolve the strike at steel producer ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA). The union said in a statement on Tuesday that it had been unable to reach an accord with the employer, and that it would continue the strike, which started on March 11 and is affecting all of AMSA's operations, including Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging, Saldanha and Newcastle. view more
