Study urges South Africa to find energy-storage niche

Thursday 17th August 2017

With energy storage considered to be the "new wave" in the energy sector and increasingly becoming a reality, South Africa needs to prepare itself if it wishes to take advantage of the energy storage growth opportunities within the energy storage stationary value chain and the mobility value chain, says State-owned development finance institution Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) senior project development manager Bertie Strydom. Presenting an overview of an energy storage techno-economic study, in Johannesburg, on Thursday, he stressed that South Africa should not try to "reinvent the wheel", but "should understand its competitive advantages and the sustainable opportunities within the respective value chains, start exploiting opportunities and secure its position in collaboration with key international partnerships". view more

In a context of State capture, the 'developmental-State project is almost dead'

Thursday 17th August 2017

In the context of State capture and corruption, former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas believes South Africa's "developmental-State project is almost dead", with resources being diverted away form dealing with the country's serious unemployment crisis towards poorly governed State-owned companies (SOCs). Speaking at the release this week of a new Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE) research document dealing with youth unemployment, Jonas argued that the country's SOCs were increasingly competing with the private sector, rather than "working in a symbiotic way in the interests of the economy". view more

M&R warns 'costly' Middle East exit will drag 2017 earnings lower

Thursday 17th August 2017

Engineering group Murray & Roberts (M&R), which sold its Southern African infrastructure and building units to a Southern Palace-led consortium in November, has warned that its earnings will fall by more than expected in 2017, owing to additional costs associated with four remaining building projects in the Middle East. After the Middle East business was excluded from the November disposal, the company's board decided on an exit strategy. However, in a trading statement issued on Thursday, M&R reported that the closure would be "very costly", owing to increased costs associated with the projects, as well as an unfavourable arbitration ruling on a project completed in 2011. view more
