Friday 20th April 2018 A new no-holds-barred study of South Africa's economic transformation over the past two decades concludes that the country has not only deindustrialised prematurely, but has also failed to materially transform its economic structure to one that encourages inclusive growth and development. Titled 'Structural Transformation in South Africa: moving towards a smart, open economy for all', the report calls for the creation of a broad coalition for reindustrialisation, underpinned by productive investment and a widening economic participation. view more
Friday 20th April 2018 The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has confirmed that it is opposed to reducing protection on the import of electric vehicles (EVs) as a way of increasing domestic demand, arguing that automotive firms should, instead, use the duty offsets available to them through production rebate credit certificates to increase EV imports. The department estimates that the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have accumulated R6-billion-worth of production rebate credit certificates. view more
Friday 20th April 2018 The world did not stop to allow South Africa to get off. While 'sunny South Africa' spent more than two years delaying the introduction of new renewable-energy plants, including 12 solar photovoltaic (PV) projects and a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant, the rest of the world continued investing. In 2017 alone, the generation capacity associated with solar PV grew by 32%, with the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) reporting a rise in worldwide capacity to 385 GW, from 292 GW in 2016. The increase is even more impressive when viewed over a longer horizon. In 2008, the global installed solar PV base stood at less than 15 GW. view more
Friday 20th April 2018 The resignation of Garry Pita as CFO of State-owned Transnet does not absolve him of accountability should he be found to have had a role in the alleged corruption at Transnet, the Department of Public Enterprise (DPE) said late on Thursday. Pita on Thursday resigned after 12 years at Transnet, stating that it was in the interest of his health and his family. view more

In an announcement on Friday, the M&R independent board reiterated that Aton's approach was opportunistic and said it was timed to coincide with unprecedented weakness in M&R's share price. view more

Friday 20th April 2018 The South African National Space Agency's (Sansa's) Space Weather Regional Warning Centre, at Hermanus in the Western Cape, was officially rededicated on Thursday by Science and Technology Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane following its recent upgrade. This is the only Space Weather Regional Warning Centre in Africa. In her address, the Minister noted the important role of space science in supporting economic development, promoting cooperation in research and development and building a knowledge economy, as well as mitigating the effects of adverse space weather events.
Space weather refers to conditions on the Sun, the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere and thermosphere that can influence the performance and reliability of space-based and ground-based technology systems. The main space weather phenomena are solar flares, solar energetic particles (protons, electrons and helium ions) and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs).
"Extreme space weather storms are a risk that could endanger the economy, costing South Africa billions of rands if not mitigated effectively," highlighted Sansa CEO Dr Val Munsami. "Governments in several countries, including the USA and UK, have recently listed space weather on their National Risk Registers." view more
