Small enterprise development has received a welcome shot in the arm with the launch by SA Home Loans of its Sekela Development Programme. "At SA Home Loans we recognise that entrepreneurs are the future of our economy. The Sekela Development Programme is our modest contribution to making that future a reality," said Zakheni Dlamini, Director of Business Development for the home finance provider. Twelve KZN small businesses were chosen to take part in the programme from a shortlist of 20 after a rigorous selection process. "Preference was given to black female and black youth-owned enterprises, as we are conscious of the need for a more balanced business society that redresses some of the imbalances of the past," Zakheni said. Candidates had to be willing to commit to the programme for a period of six months with the owner or owners involved in the day-to-day running of the business and looking for assistance in making their business sustainable, both financially and operationally. The programme will be facilitated by experienced enterprise development practitioners, Business Fit. The chosen entrepreneurs will be exposed to engaging business development workshops and focussed business mentorship over the next six months. "The aim is to provide foundational support that will enable the growth and sustainability of entrepreneurs," said Dlamini. The programme will follow the Business Fit methodology of Discover, Develop, and Deliver. Business Fit will invest in lectures, coaching, mentorship and development together with ad hoc training, where necessary, of the 12 successful entrepreneurs. "This is the perfect balance of theory and hands-on mentorship." Dlamini said that at the end of the six-month programme they would assess the growth and development of the selected enterprises using established measures including improved business administration knowledge and industry compliance, increased turnover and profitability, and improved ability to create employment opportunities. While the programme will initially benefit the 12 KZN-based entrepreneurs selected, the ultimate aim is to roll out the initiative nationally. "SA Home Loans turned 17 this year and while we're now firmly established in the mortgage market, we remember what it's like to be a start-up. We grew from a one-office operation with a handful of employees into a national brand that has contributed more than 2400 employment opportunities. "We were able to do this thanks to the support of our clients, funders and shareholders. The Sekela Development Programme is our way of paying it forward by showing our support for promising emerging enterprises." Dlamini said. "We congratulate the 12 businesses selected to participate. We're confident they will do us and themselves proud." The 12 enterprises selected for the inaugural SA Home Loans Sekela Development Programme are:
