KwaZulu-Natal Investment Monitor May 2014

The national economic slowdown and difficult investment environment is affecting fixed investment in Kwazulu-Natal. The total investment index of the latest KwaZulu-Natal investment monitor, as compiled by Economists.co.za, declined by 4% year-on-year, and has now been in decline for 12 of the last 13 months. Quarter-on-quarter fixed investment fell 0.2%.

The fact that fixed capital formation in the province remains negative is probably also a factor not only of economic indicators such as a fall in the currency but also one of confidence which has been beaten back by massive and long lasting industrial action over the last year to 18 months.

KwaZulu-Natal Business Barometer July 2014

The strain that the South African economy is under continues to show in KwaZulu-Natal. Prolonged labour strife, rising inflation and higher interest rates hamper business and consumer confidence. The July 2014 KwaZulu-Natal barometer, as compiled by Economists.co.za, decreased 2.1% year-on-Year, the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline, and fell 1% month-on-month. The growth index was up 1% from a year ago and economic stress increased substantially.
