African Oxygen Limited (Afrox) is sub-Saharan Africa’s market leader in gases and welding products and one of the most trusted brands with products and services that span all industries. Afrox was founded in 1927, listed on the JSE in 1963, and has prospered by constantly meeting the needs of customers and developing solutions that add value to customers’ applications. The Linde Group, a global gases, engineering and technology company is the parent company.

The main products supplied are oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, helium and hydrogen by means of 11 stra-tegically sited plants in southern Africa and over 20 gas producing PSAs, mainly sited on customers’ premises. Our distribution network covers some 24 million kilometres every year delivering welding products and consumables, medical, industrial, special gases and LPG to customers in bulk, mini bulk or in cylinders of several sizes.
Our gases and gas supply equipment are used in everything from the production of iron and steel to the manufacture of motor vehicles and high quality ceramics. Afrox’s gases are used in various applications, including scientific laboratories, high technology medical and pharmaceutical processes, freezing, chilling, food preparation, in fire extinguishers and water purification, as deodorant and insecticide propellants, in refrigeration, air conditioning systems, in most restaurants, pubs and hotels, and even for inflating balloons.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) The Handigas brand is synonymous with LPG in South Africa and is Afrox’s strongest subsidiary brand. Safe, reliable and very efficient, Handigas provides unmatched power and portability over an extremely wide range of applications. Handigas is the leading source of heating energy in the hospitality business. It is also popular for space heating and for hot water applications, which has a very efficient energy overhead, compared with other forms of hot water heating. Afrox supplies 80% of its customers direct, with the balance channelled through independent distributors.
All Afrox gas installations are installed to meet the highest standards by skilled LPG technicians under the authority of the local fire authorities and in line with local by-laws.

Electrical Arc Welding and Cutting Equipment Afrox is the leading supplier of Electrical Arc Welding and Cutting Equipment in Southern Africa. Distribution through Gas and Gear branches nationwide, business locations throughout the African continent and Indian OceanIslands, places Afrox is in a unique position to service the welding and cutting market. Covering all the popular welding processes including Gas, MMA, MIG and TIG along with plasma and oxy-fuel cutting Afrox is able to provide welding and cutting solutions for almost all scenarios our customers may encounter.
Customer Service Centre The customer service centre is Afrox’s key interface with thousands of customers. It boasts some of the most sophisticated telecommunications technology in South Africa and operates on a fully integrated multimedia platform.
In addition to this the bulk scheduling centre deals with more than 20 000 customer deliveries per month.
Corporate Social Investment Afrox takes seriously the influence and impact its business has on society, the economy and the environment.
The comprehensive hands-on CSI programme is based on empowerment, consultation and partnerships with financial support from the company. Employees volunteer their time and talents to help their local communities.
The Community Involvement Program (CIP) is an employee-driven initiative which now supports and manages 81 projects offering help to 8 000 disadvantaged children throughout South Africa and in nine other African countries.
