Saint Giles Open Day

2015-03-26

The Saint Giles Non Profit Organisation for the Disabled hosted an open day on the 25th of March, where they welcomed members of the public to take a tour in their premises, where they occupy a remedial gym, charity shop and factory.

Saint Giles is known for working with the disabled, and the remedial gym is 100% accessible for the disabled, as the equipment is adjustable to accommodate wheelchairs. The gym has 4 permanent staff as well as 3 volunteers.
Furthermore, in the factory they are curently busy with the sorting, packaging and assembling of spices for Unilever. The organisation also has appliance rentals where wheelchairs and walkers can be hired at a noinal price.

The organisation strives to assist the disabled in terms of support and careers. Out of the 70 permanent employees, 43 are disabled. Saint Giles also takes part in the employee wellness that is supoorted by the Durban Chamber Foundation. This entails a day where all employees get tested and educated concerning sickness and wellbeing, with support being offered if necessary. There is also a Saint Giles database for jobseekers.

The organisation is rightly named after the seventh century Saint Giles, who spent his time working wth the disabled.
