Durban Chamber - Economic Affairs Forum Meeting - 15 July

2015-07-07

Join us as we discuss The Recycling Value Chain with our local leading economists: Urban-Econ

Urban-Econ Development Economists has been commissioned by eThekwini Municipality’s Economic Development and Investment Promotion Unit (ED&IPU) and Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit (also referred to as Durban Solid Waste or DSW) to undertake a recycling value chain analysis for eThekwini.

The ultimate purpose of this research is to examine the status quo of cardboard and paper, glass, building waste, e-waste, tyres, metals, cans, and plastic recycling in eThekwini across their value chains. The research will determine practical and relevant interventions that will:

  • Enhance the management and recycling of waste
  • Provide support to the formal waste recycling sector
  • Improve the livelihoods of informal recyclers
  • Enhance the collaboration between spheres in the eThekwini Municipality
  • Ultimately stimulate economic development through the creation of a robust recycling sector
  • Provide employment opportunities in both the formal and informal sectors
