Durban Chamber - 2022: Meet you in Durban

2015-12-07

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), together with key stakeholders and a few members returned from the Commonwealth Business Forum held in Malta from 24 to 26 November 2015. The business mission was an invite from the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, with a request to become a member from one of their founding members.

The Durban Chamber treated the mission as an exploratory one to see if the Commonwealth Business Forum (Enterprise and Investment Council) provided a business friendly platform for its members and stakeholders (especially with all the interest in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Durban).
The delegation of 12 included members of the  Durban Chamber Board, eThekwini Municipality, Trade and Investment Kwa-Zulu Natal, members of the Chamber and the President of ILembe Chamber.  The aim of the trip was to secure engagements with key stakeholders, benchmark best practice from past games and business opportunities.

Business engagements included meetings with:

1. Lena Wilson (CE of Scottish Enterprise) who shared their experience, operating model as well as key stakeholder engagements for the 2014 Games they hosted in Glasgow. She highlighted the importance of localising the games but keeping the national identity. Lena has offered to come to SA to mentor and drive stakeholder engagement and awareness. She has also committed to seconding a member of staff.

2. Abdul Hamza (Business Development Head of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council) and Oliver Everett (CE of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council) facilitated many of the key engagements and provided a compelling argument to join their organisation that spreads across 53 countries.

3. Louisa Martin (President of Commonwealth Games Federation) and David Grevenberg (CEO) shared the success, challenges and focus areas of past games whilst highlighting the need for business involvement.  They recommended that we try not to do the best games but rather get the world to experience the African games to the best of our ability.

In conclusion, the mission was a great learning and engagement platform for team Durban, with the key message to: Start planning now to make the Commonwealth Games 2022, successful, inclusive and impactful. The delegation carried the SA flag high with the tagline “2022: Meet you in Durban”.

Going forward the team will start to put together a work plan, implementing the knowledge gained and start preparing for the games.
