2015-12-08

For over a decade, the Durban Chamber of Commerce (DCCI) has collaborated with Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) to highlight successful exporters in KwaZulu Natal.  Each year, the programme culminates in the KZN Exporter of the Year Awards Gala Dinner at which the winners are announced. This year the awards were held on 29 October 2015 at Sibaya. The Keynote Address was by Mr Zama Gwala, CEO of TIKZN, and Mr Richard Jacob, CEO of Hulamin, was the guest speaker.

The DCCI through its International Business Department aims to promote international trade in the eThekwini Municipal area and beyond. This aim speaks to Goal 1, 2 and 8 of the Business Vision for the Economic Development of Durban. The Chamber initiated the Business Vision to challenge the Business community in eThekwini, to apply its collective mind to encourage local economic development.

Goal 1: Increased investment in the city’s economy
Goal 2: Institutional partnership and collaboration
Goal 8: The achievement of ‘International Destination’ status for leisure, business and other tourists

The awards are an ideal showcase for emerging and established exporters of a wide range of goods. With a GDP contribution of 16%, KwaZulu Natal is the second largest economic contributor to the South African economy. A large part of the KZN economy is as a result of being host to the Durban Container Terminal, the largest in Southern Africa, and Richards Bay Terminal. These two facilities are among 16 terminals run by TPT. KZN’s contribution to the SA GDP.
