Durban Chamber - Event Report - Operation Phakisa

2016-02-08

Operation Phakisa is an initiative designed to fast track the implementation of development programmes to unlock the economic potential of South Africa’s ocean economy. The Marine Transport Manufacturing Lab creates significant opportunities for KZN business.

In summary the opportunities focus on infrastructure development in Durban and Richards Bay including an industrial development zone at Richards Bay. It also seeks to encourage training centres to produce artisans for the ship building and repair trade and seafarers for South African ships. In addition, far reaching changes to the import and export regimes will see opportunities created for insurers and for industry able to beneficiate raw materials before their export.

Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa has created a multi-disciplinary Operation Phakisa team. The team focuses on identifying opportunities for clients and sectors, providing guidance on initiatives and facilitating meetings with the relevant stakeholders.

At an information sharing session held at the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) on Thursday, 12 November by Malcolm Hartwell, a Director in the transport and ports team, presented an overview of Operation Phakisa, summarising initiatives to which the State has committed significant resources. His presentation assisted members in unpacking and understanding how businesses can leverage off the manifold opportunities offered by Operation Phakisa and its initiatives.

Projects and initiatives that government establishes often have plenty of opportunities that businesses can seize, but often these opportunities are missed due to lack of accurate knowledge. Through constant engagement with industry experts and local government, the Chamber is able to realise these opportunities and unpack them to its members. This is in alignment with goal 1 and 3 of the Business Vision of the Economic Development of Durban. The Chamber initiated the Business vision to challenge the Business community of eThekwini, to apply its collective mind to encourage local economic development.

Goal 1: Increased investment in the City’s economy

Goal 3: Creation of meaningful employment
