Durban Chamber - Event Report: Women in Business PowerHouse with Christa Bonnet and Mpume Langa

2016-02-09

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Women in Business (WIB) PowerHouse event had the pleasure of hosting two incredible women on the 1st of September 2015. These PowerHouse events exist to inform, educate and empower women and also provide valuable networking opportunities with key industry players.

An insightful presentation was given by Christa Bonnet on ‘Conscious Living and Leadership for Women in business’. Christa mother, consultant, Enterprise and Supplier Development Specialist, Chief Executive Officer of The Difference Makers NPO, Author, Coach and Mentor and PhD Student in Spiritual and Transformational Leadership in Business. Her philosophy in life is to empower, to inspire and to make a difference.

Mpume Langa, an accomplished business executive with over 17 years experience in portfolio and stakeholder management. She has high leadership skills manifested in high performing teams she has built in the service industry. She is the first African woman to be a Head of Private Banking in Absa. She is the Chairperson of Business Woman's Association KZN. She was nominated as a finalist in the Business Women's Association Regional Business Awards in 2013. Mpume elaborated on the results of the Business Women’s Association Census Findings 2015. The 2015 Census is the only one of its kind in South Africa that provides the most comprehensive and insightful analysis of women in leadership, spanning across various organisational entities and economic sectors to date.

The DCCI through its WIB Business Forums aims to provide networking opportunities for businesses with common interests whilst highlighting pressing issues faced by the Business community. This aim speaks to goal 4 of the Business Vision for the Economic Development of Durban. The Chamber Initiated the Business Vision to challenge the Business community in eThekwini, to apply its collective mind to encourage local economic development.

Goal 4: The alignment of skills development and education to the requirements of economic growth and job creation in the city

If you have a business that is women owned, it is important to belong to organised bodies that will lobby and advocate on your behalf and also promote socio-economic interests. It is through this primary need that the DCCI established the WIB forum.
