His Worship the Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo today, 02/05/13, launched “The Clean My City Programme” aimed at keeping the City clean. During the launch, Mayor Nxumalo urged eThekwini residents to fully participate in efforts to ensure that the City was clean and all service delivery challenges are addressed.

The Mayor Nxumalo and City Manager Sibusiso Sithole led a team of Councillors, senior managers and officials on a cleanup drive in a number of targeted areas in the City. Team members targeted areas such as Umngeni, Warwick Junction, Victoria, Monty Naicker and Margaret Mncadi Streets.

The cleaning team concentrated on sweeping the streets, taking off illegal abortion stickers pasted on the walls, pruning trees, identifying some of the areas that need special priority, buildings that need to be revamped and street lights replacement.

The programme will continue tomorrow, Friday 03/05/13, with a clean up drive at the Albert Park, including the so-called “Whoonga Park”.

Mayor Nxumalo said part of the programme includes a massive education drive to educate residents about their responsibility to keep their City clean, including street traders and other businesses.

An Operation Centre has been established to plan and co-ordinate the programme and to ensure that it is sustainable.

“We are beginning a new chapter as we launch this campaign and we have made a commitment to sustain the programme. We urge the community to work with us and be responsible for the cleanliness because we want to remain the cleanest City in the country,” said Nxumalo.

He said the Municipality will ensure that the CCTV cameras are operational to curb the level of crime in hotspots that have already been identified and also to install cameras where they are needed most. He emphasised that the bylaws would be enforced to deal with transgressions like illegal dumping.

Other areas that will receive special attention include uMlazi and Isipingo, Clermont and Pinetown, Tongaat and Phoenix as well as Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu (PINK) areas, Greater Chatsworth, Greater Cato Manor and areas of the Greater South.

Members of the media are invited to join the Mayor and the team when they clean-up at Albert Park at 08h30 tomorrow, Friday, 03/05/13.
