2013-05-23

Durban has a action packed schedule this weekend with a lineup of activities ranging from major sporting events taking place at Moses Mabhida Stadium and ABSA Stadium to the African Renaissance concert at the ICC on the same day, Saturday 25 May 2013. This will be followed by East Coast Radio Big Walk on Sunday 26 May 2013. The City known as the country’s sporting capital will once again prove that it has the capacity to handle and host sporting fans and guests in all its major venues on the same day with smooth logistics.

This weekend the Durban’s Fun Season will be bringing together thousands of sporting fans, both soccer and rugby in one sporting precinct. The weekend begins with the sold out Nedbank Cup Final between PSL winners Kaizer Chiefs and Supersport United in Moses Mabhida at 15h00 and a Super 15 match between the Sharks and the Blue Bulls at ABSA Stadium kicking off at 19:00. Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC, will host an African Renaissance concert which starts at 18:30, featuring Lira, Professor and Mafikizolo. The African Day Concert takes place during the African Renaissance Festival, which began 15 years ago in an endeavor to reignite Africa’s own belief in itself and in its potential to develop its own resources.

The Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk is a fun-filled, family mass participation walking event that will takes place on Sunday, 26 May 2013. Just over 33 000 entrants have been received from participants in one of four major distances, including 5 km, 10 km, 15 km and 20 km walk. All routes begin at Ushaka Marine World, proceed north on Durban’s scenic beachfront promenade and finishes at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

This will not be the first time the city hosts two major events in one weekend. In fact, all Durban’s major attractions will be put to use and will host a variety of activities on the same weekend. Phillip Sithole, Head of Durban Tourism stated, “The city’s infrastructure and the capacity to handle these events at the same time affirm that we are the preferred sporting and entertainment destination in the country. The city’s without fail will deliver a harmonious sporting weekend incident free, boasting an economic impact of almost R20 million for the city. The City works closely with Metro Police and have plans in place to deal with whatever crisis that might arise. It is well known that with major events taking place in Durban, especially around Moses Mabhida precinct there is high traffic congestions, however the city’s metro police will be visible to give direction to motorists.”

Durban is also gearing itself to host the second Top Gear Festival at Moses Mabhida Stadium on the 15th - 16 June 2013. The Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Richard Hammond and The Stig are coming back to Durban to present the most popular motor sports show with lots of surprises and world class acts and charismatic antics that the show is known for.
