eThekwini Municipality:Recleaned Albert Park

2013-06-24

The Municipality has intensified its clean up programme in the Durban CBD as part of Clean My City Programme. Different City streets and Albert Park were revisited for follow up operations.

The operation included law enforcement activities conducted by Metro Police and South African Police Services. They arrested five people found in possession of drugs and are said to be living at the Park. Metro Police Superintendent, Anand Maharaj said 1300 vehicles were charged for various road offenses and nine suspected illegal immigrants were also arrested.

This was part of the Clean My City Programme that was launched by the Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo at the beginning of May. About six tons of litter was collected during the cleanup at the Albert Park. Dagga and knives were uncovered during the clean up.

City Manager Sibusiso Sithole said a contractor is currently fencing the open area which has become known as Whoonga Park to prevent re-occupation. He said the Municipality was reclaiming public spaces and urged communities to also participate in the effort.

About 10 panel beaters shops were found to be operating without proper business for permits and also did not comply with health and safety regulations. They will be issued with notices failing to comply with Municipal bylaws.
