eThekwini Municipality:Ablution facilities handover

2013-09-06

EThekwini Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo, says that all citizens of the City are entitled to have access to basic services and the Municipality will stop at nothing to ensure that this happens. Nxumalo was speaking during a ceremony where 10 ablution units were handed over to the community of KwaMashu's J-Section in Ward 45 today, 05/09/2013. Each unit services about 75 families and has both and male female facilities.

The container toilets are being rolled out to other areas within eThekwini as part of the Council programme to provide interim services to people living in informal settlements and transit camps. The services also include the electrification of informal settlements and the provision of water to the people that are still waiting to receive houses.

“We have taken a decision to provide all basic services to our people even if they haven’t received houses yet. Providing access to basic services for all our people is something that we are duty bound to do and as a Municipality our commitment remains unquestioned in this regard. We will be rolling out this programme to all eThekwini regions in order to make sure that we reach all deserving people in the shortest time possible,” explained Nxumalo.

The project has already seen more than 200 000 people from all over eThekwini having access to proper sanitation and ablution facilities to date and most informal settlements have already been electrified and have access to water and refuse collection services.

Meanwhile, Mayor Nxumalo will launch the electrification programme for informal settlements at eManyaleni informal settlement near Chatsworth on Sunday, 08/09/13.
