eThekwini Municipality:Heritage month ends on a high note2013-10-03 It has been a month of exhilarating fun for the citizens of eThekwini, as people from different cultures and race groups came together to celebrate and embrace their heritage and cultures.
To celebrate this historically significant month, the Municipality’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit, hosted various activities aimed at showcasing cultural, environmental, sports and other services that are provided as part of protecting and promoting our heritage. The Pufaro Park in Newlands East, historically known for being a den for criminals, was reconstructed and playlots were repainted. The Head of Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit, Thembinkosi Ngcobo assured the community of Newlands East that the park would never be allowed to deteriorate like it did before. “This is your space and we want you to enjoy it. We will work with you to ensure that the park is well maintained and our children have a safe and conducive place to play,†said Ngcobo. Meanwhile new and world-class ablution facilities were officially opened at How Long Park in Umlazi. A stage was also built at the park. This will allow for cultural and arts activities to take place at the site, which the community will be able to enjoy and be a part of. Swimmers in Clermont will now be able to enjoy and have access to the local swimming pool throughout the year as it was recently installed with heating facilities. “We also launched, disa swimming, a programme for the disabled community where they can also partake in water sports,†said Gopaul Pillay, the Manager of Aquatics in the Municipality. Pillay added that the Municipality is committed to producing more world class swimmers, such as gold medallist, Chad le Clos. “We want the community, particularly the youth, to take full advantage of these facilities and hone their swimming skills.†To round off the heritage month celebrations, the Municipality will host a Visual Art-Jazz Expression Show which is aimed at promoting quality lifestyle and allowing different forms of art to be expressed in one space.
