eThekwini Municipality - MUSEUMS IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY

2014-04-15

As part of celebrating 20 Years of Democracy members of the media are invited to attend the eThekwini Municipality’s Local History Museum Seminar which is titled ‘Museums in a Democratic Society’ to be held on Wednesday, 16/04/2014 at KwaMuhle Museum (130 Bram Fischer Road, Durban).

The aim of the seminar is to engage in a discussion on the roles that historical museums and exhibitions play in a democratic society, aspects that contribute to public controversy surrounding museums that provide a version of history and the means through which these aspects can be and should be handled by museums 20 years into the democratic freedom.

Post-apartheid, museums have struggled to shift from being pro-apartheid representational spaces to ones that are fostering and advocating for a democratic society. Twenty years into democracy, museums should accommodate all irrespective of race, tribe, belief and language. The seminar aims to conduct an investigation on how museums can be changed and be affiliated with principles of a democratic ‘rainbow nation’, where our delicate history is presented in a manner that does not offend any demographic group despite our diversity.

DETAILS OF THE SEMINAR ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Venue : KwaMuhle Museum (130 Brain Fischer Road, Durban)

Date : 16/04/2014

Time : 09H30 to 13H30
