eThekwini Municipality - Divisional Conditions of Service

2014-05-06

The Municipality has noted with concern the incidents emanating from today’s meeting with labour relating to the Divisional Conditions of Service.

The Mayor has called an urgent Special Executive Committee meeting to look into this matter and find a way forward.

Since the Supreme Court of Appeals (SCA) ruled on the matter, the Municipality has been engaged with labour on how the decision of the court should be implemented. The negotiations have resulted in agreements on most of the issues by all the parties concerned. The only outstanding issue has been the period within which to effect payment to affected employees. Today Labour decided to embark on an unlawful and violent protest action to demonstrate their discontent.

The Municipality is committed to finding an amicable solution to this matter, and to that end, negotiations are currently underway with the Provincial and National Treasury and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
