eThekwini Municipality - UMKHUMBANE CULTURAL AND HERITAGE CENTRE SET TO BOOST ECONOMY IN CATO MANOR

2014-07-16

To revive the Cato Manor area, preserve our cultural heritage and boost tourism, the Municipality has invested R75 million in the construction for the second phase of Umkhumbane Cultural and Heritage Centre.

The centre will house a state-of-the-art museum that aims to acknowledge and celebrate the role played by the Zulu Kingdom in the country’s liberation and in achieving peace in the province and the country.

The Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo, Councillors and senior officials will tomorrow, 17/07/14 visit the construction site to assess the progress of the project.

The development of the centre also aims to revive the history and heritage of Cato Manor as people in the area were deeply wounded and affected by forced removals during the apartheid years.

The first phase of the project included the burial site of the remains of the late mother of King Goodwill Zwelithini, Queen Thomozile kaNdwandwe Zulu, parking lot and fencing the area.

It is envisaged that project will contribute positively to City’s economy, as it will uplift the standard of living among the Cato Manor community, alleviate poverty and increase employment in the area.

Once complete, the project will attract tourists, which will translate to great economic spin-offs for the City.

Members of the media are invited to the sod-turning ceremony and site inspection scheduled as follows:

Date: Thursday, 17/07/14

Time: 11H00

Venue: 2 Kaladen Road, corner Vusi Mzimela and Mary Thipe Road
