ETHEKWINI TURNS ‘67 MINUTES’ INTO A METRO-WIDE CARNIVAL OF CHANGE

2014-07-18

Tomorrow, 18/07/2014, South Africans will spend their ‘67 minutes’ to make this world a better place and gather at old age homes, soup kitchens, parks and homes for the disabled to mark the first Mandela Day after the former statesman Nelson Mandela’s death.

To celebrate this momentous day MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube, MEC for Health Sibongiseni Dhlomo, the Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo and members of the Executive Committee will lead an entourage of officials from different departments when they volunteer their time in various Wards across eThekwini Municipality.

Several clean-up operations and social interventions will take place in various parts of the City as a continuation of the Mayor’s Clean and Maintain My City programme which is in line with the Municipality’s vision of being Africa’s most caring and liveable City by 2030.

Our ‘67 Minutes’ of giving back will not only involve cleaning up parks and pavements, but will also encompass the planting of trees, painting of schools and interacting with the elderly during a health and wellness event in Chesterville.

The leadership will also hand over storage and ablution facilities to informal traders in Amanzimtoti before joining Premier Senzo Mchunu in Umlazi where he will be handing over a house.

The delegation will be spread out across all wards including homes for the vulnerable and other areas that require intervention.

Nxumalo calls on all employees, residents and business operators to dedicate 67 minutes towards a good cause by cleaning their living and working spaces between 12h00 -13h07 Friday, 18/07/2014.

The Mayor invites the media to partner with the Provincial Government and the Municipality and cover the events when they celebrate the iconic hero’s birthday by giving back to those less fortunate, cleaning up to create beautiful and clean neighbourhoods and raise awareness about the negative impacts of illegal electricity and water connections.

A multi-faceted team comprising of Metro Police, Durban Solid Waste, Parks, Leisure and Cemeteries Unit and Safer Cities will conduct operations in areas occupied by vagrants to demonstrate that the City is committed to assisting the homeless by helping them rebuild their lives.
