EThekwini celebrates Mandela Day giving back to the less fortunate

2014-07-21

The Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo, today, 18/07/2014, led members of the Executive Committee during a full scale clean-up operation and social intervention programme aimed at improving the lives of the people of eThekwini in line with this year’s Mandela Day theme.

The day’s activities were in response to a call made by President Jacob Zuma during his State of the Nation Address, that South Africans must dedicate 67 minutes of their time to clean up their environment and do community service in honour of the late former statesman Dr Nelson Mandela.

Nxumalo and eThekwini officials were joined by MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube, MEC of Health Sibongiseni Dhlomo as they extensively cleaned the King Dinizulu Park and the adjacent Botha Taxi Rank encouraging taxi operators and commuters to keep their environment clean.

Today’s programme included a visit to the elderly people in Chesterville who were pampered by beauticians from The Pavilion Shopping Centre and a number of Non Profit Organisations were also provided with essentials to sustain their organisations.

As part of the programme, Premier Senzo Mchunu handed over two houses to two destitute families in Umlazi.

“The significance of today’s activities was to honour and pay respect to Madiba, a leader that was extraordinary. Our generational mission is to improve the socio economic conditions of our people because this is something that Madiba dedicated his life fighting for,” he said.

Nxumalo urged communities to put their 67 minutes of community service to good use by cleaning up clinics, schools and local parks.

“I am happy that some of the projects we are visiting today are in response to the promises we made during the elections campaign. We had promised to build a house for these families during our door to door campaign and I am happy that today that promise has been fulfilled,” he said.

Nxumalo concluded the day’s activities by visiting Ifikile Inhlanhla Hope Centre in Umbumbulu where he had lunch and interacted with the children living with disabilities.

In partnership with the Municipality, The Pavilion Shopping Centre Management donated resources to ensure that the children are well taken care of.
