eTHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY HOSTS LEARNING EXCHANGE ON URBAN SAFETY AND CRIME PREVENTION

2014-12-01

EThekwini Municipality is committed to ensuring that all citizens are able to live in a safe and conducive environment. It is for this reason that the Municipality’s Safer Cities Unit will host the Learning Exchange under the theme, “Urban Safety and Crime Prevention.”

The Learning Exchange will see various experts in the field of crime prevention and management share ideas on best practice on the subject. Urban crime is complex, multi-layered and multi-dimensional in nature. However, good governance, planning and management can contribute towards improving the safety of urban communities. A “safe” city is one that is equitable, progressive and results in positive outcomes that promote mutual trust and equity in the distribution of opportunities among all members of society.

It is envisaged that the outcome of the learning exchange will empower cities to adopt preventative approaches that tackle root causes of violence and insecurity.

Preceding the Learning Exchange, the Urban Safety Reference Group will meet on Tuesday, 02 December 2014 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, 9am. They will deliberate on urban safety issues and share best practise in ensuring that our cities/towns are safer places to live in.
