eThekwini Municipality - Get ready for the 36th Durban film festival

2015-06-05

July sees the 36th Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) taking place in venues in and around the City from July 16 to 26.

As part of an endeavour to grow a vibrant film sector in the City, the Durban Film Office (DFO), the film industry development arm of the eThekwini Municipality, which is mandated to position Durban as a world-class film production destination and facilitator for the development of the local film industry, has partnered with the DIFF for the past 6 years in the Durban FilmMart (DFM) which takes place within the festival from July 17 to 20.

The DFM, which aims to raise the visibility of African cinema, stimulate production on the continent, and facilitate project collaboration between African filmmakers, is presented in three strategic pillars: a Finance Forum, Master Classes and Africa in Focus â€" a programme of workshops, and also offers a series of networking and social sessions with like-minded industry representatives.

Over and above the finance forum, delegates from the film industry attending the DFM, have access to the Master classes held with leading industry experts in the areas of concept development, project packaging, co-production development, new media, finance, marketing, distribution, and other themes.

The overall objective of the FilmMart is to support, facilitate and develop the growth of African film content and create viable opportunities for business within the sector to flourish The Mart, promises delegates access to influential experts, broadcasters and financiers in the film industry and creates a space for industry professionals to forge strategic relationships.

The DFM partners with a number of other funders, festivals and markets to present a dynamic event which draws important film industry players to the city. The Mart recently announced its third year of partnering with Produire au Sud of Festival des 3 Continents, a festival in Durban’s sister city â€" Nantes in France, with financial assistance from the French Embassy in South Africa.

Produire au Sud, focuses on developing film co-productions, and supports potentially talented producers with techniques to develop their skills in line with international trends and standards. It partners with the DFM in an endeavour to develop African content through a programme around story development, and creating networking opportunities for African filmmakers on an international platform.

A number of projects have, over the past two years been awarded an opportunity to participate in the Produire au Sud (PAS) Workshop through this partnership including Durban filmmakers. The DIFF also includes screenings at venues around Durban.
