More than 500 delegates attended the opening of the KwaZulu-Natal Procurement Indaba this morning, 13/08/2015, at the Durban International Convention Centre.

Hosted by eThekwini Municipality and presented in collaboration with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government and the International Labour Organisation, the Indaba was co-ordinated under the theme: “Achieving accelerated radical economic transformation through strategic public procurement”.

The Indaba aims to provide a platform for stakeholders to engage constructively on key procurement and transformation challenges and provide solutions that will give rise to real economic transformation within the Province.

Participants at the Indaba included, government, private sector statekeholders, public entities, Non-Profit Organisations, members of the community, and representatives from small enterprises.

One of the major focuses of the Indaba is to find solutions to address the challenges and also to contribute meaningfully to the national conversation on Supply Chain Management reform and to further:

•discuss the possibility for localisation and ring-fencing of certain economic sectors to achieve real economic transformation in KZN

•draw conclusions on the obstacles to meaningful and sustainable participation of black people on procurement opportunities provided by Government and the Private sector

•discuss the possibility of linking procurement to Government strategy for revitalisation of township economy

•attain stakeholder’s commitment on procurement targets as set out in Government strategies

•discuss the possibility of an integrated procurement system that would link Government procurement opportunities with the target group

Speaking at the Indaba KZN Premier, Honourable Senzo Mchunu addressed the repositioning of the procurement policy in order to support KZN’s economic growth and development while Minister of Small Business Development, Lindiwe Zulu outlined the steps to be taken to ensure successful implementation of the procurement policy for the benefit of SMME’s and tangible economic transformation.

The Indaba will continue tomorrow with the Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene as the keynote speaker, he will discuss on the role of the Government procurement policy implementation in accelerated economic transformation problems and prospects. Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Pravin Gordhan will present a paper on unlocking the strategic role of Local Government in procurement.
